According to ClimbingTimes.com, the climbing gear market is worth around $17 billion a year, and in the last year, sales of climbing gear have grown at an average of 10% a year.
However, that growth is due to a lack of quality and innovation, and some experts are predicting that the market is going to crash unless manufacturers take on more responsibility.
“In terms of quality, climbing equipment is becoming more and more of a niche market,” said Brian Clements, the co-founder of ClimbingGear.com.
“There are a lot of products out there that aren’t made by professionals, but that’s the beauty of climbing.
If you are a pro, you have a much better understanding of how to use your equipment.”
Clements believes that manufacturers are not taking enough responsibility for the quality of their products.
“If you go to a hardware store, they are all about how to make the best products, but if you are going to go out and buy a climbing rope, you need to know what you are getting and what you should be doing with it,” he said.

“It’s a real problem and we are starting to see that in the market.”
According to a report from US climbing magazine EliteXClimb, climbing hardware sales have been flat since 2015.
According to a recent survey by Climbing Gear, US climbers spend just $4.2 billion on gear each year, down from $5.4 billion in 2015.
However there is hope for the future of climbing equipment as companies such as Alpine Equipment and Alpine Supply are creating more quality climbing equipment, which is an important part of the climb.
“At the end of the day, if you want to climb in the mountains, there’s only one thing you can count on,” said Clements.
“The only thing you have to worry about is your gear.”
