TechCrunch – March 23, 2019 – The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
2 director James Gunn and producer Dave Filoni have a message for the Donald Trump administration.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the directors said they believe the current administration is “the worst in history” for making progress on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“I have no doubt that we are on the brink of something catastrophic,” Gunn said.
“The worst thing about this whole thing is that, with every day that goes by, we are getting closer to a situation where I have to say, ‘Enough is enough.’
We are on a collision course with the most destructive presidency in history.
It’s beyond my ability to predict.
I just don’t have the luxury of thinking that we’re going to win.”
Gunn said that the Guardians are “devastating” because of the political environment, but that the two creators are “not going to let that happen to us.”
“We’re going into this war of ideas with a president who thinks he can get away with it,” Gunn continued.
“We are not going to allow that to happen to our work, and that’s what we’re doing, we’re trying to keep our heads above water and continue to do the best work we can, but we are going to have to face the consequences of what we are doing.”
Filoni, who co-directed the first Guardians movie in 2014, also said that he thinks the current political climate will “destroy” the world of Marvel films.
“It is the most dangerous presidency in the history of the United States, and this president has proven to be absolutely incapable of doing anything but wrecking everything,” Filoni said.
In a separate interview with THR, Gunn and Filoni both talked about the importance of the next installment in the Guardians of The Galaxy saga, the sequel to the 2015 movie The Avengers.
“They are the only films I can see going forward,” Filoisw said.
